Escape London for two days and explore a beautiful section of the Thames Valley. During this self-guided escape you’ll glide past woodland, pastures, pubs and villages as you will learn to navigate locks and have the chance to get back to nature whilst camping on an island in the Thames.
Included: two days canoe hire, 1 nights tent hire, free trip magazine.

Adventure

Great for all abilities you’ll start with a brief intro session before your two day canoe adventure (average of 5 hours gentle paddling each day).  You will be in a 2-3 person Canadian Canoe (think Lord of the Rings) and as you make your way downstream you’ll get to explore the riverbanks, towns/villages and locks as you discover the local history, culture and wildlife.

Sleep

This escape is ‘under canvas‘ – the simplest and I would argue best way to spend a night. Your campsite is in a beautiful and idyllic location beside a lock on an island in the Thames. It is secure at night, has some basic facilities such as toilets and showers and is a short walk across a bridge to a quaint village which boasts a small selection of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Food and Drink

This trip is self-catered  but don’t worry – that doesn’t mean it’s difficult to plan or expensive! We recommend a combination of bring your own (snacks and lunch on Saturday) restaurants, pubs and cafes. We have created a a recommend food plan which you can check out in the FAQ’s below.

FAQ

What is the itinerary (blow-by-blow)?

DAY 1 – ARRIVE, INSTRUCTION, CANOE, RELAX.

Arrive at your start point (5 minutes walk from the train station) and familiarise yourself with your gear and route before getting on the river for an “all you need to know” session before heading off.

Set off downstream for a 5 hour paddle towards your evening campsite. Along the way you’ll have plenty of time to explore, have breaks, navigate 5 lock systems and stop off for a pub/packed lunch. You will most likely arrive in the late afternoon at your evening stop – a quaint, picturesque village. Your campsite is on an island in the middle of the thames, has basic facilities and is connected to the village by a bridge. The rest of the afternoon/evening can be spent exploring the local sights and eating and drinking in one of it’s many pubs or restaurants. After all that it’s time for bed.

DAY 2 – CANOE, EXPLORE, CASTLE

Wake up and either make yourself breakfast or trot back into the village for something from a café. Then jump back in your canoe for another 4-5 hour paddle downriver towards your final destination – Windsor. Take time along the way to soak in the sights and stop off at some historical and cultural sites of interest.

After lunch you’ll approach Windsor and will see a spectacular view of it’s castle before making your way to your endpoint. Sadly this is where your escape ends, but fear not, you now have time to spend a couple of hours exploring Windsor before heading back to London.

Recommended food plan.

Day 1 (Saturday): eat a big breakfast and take snacks (for both days), drinks and a packed lunch.  In the evening head into Cookham for food at a local pub or restaurant – we recommend the Bel and Dragon, the White Oak or the Spice Merchant.

Day 2 (Sunday): head back into Cookham for breakfast (different options including the Bel and Dragon) then jump back into your canoe and head downstream. On the way you’ll pass a number of pubs/cafes – we recommend the Riverside Brasserie – but you could charge through to Windsor for a late Sunday lunch.

Total cost of catering for the whole trip should range between £30 – £50 (not including drinks).

What do I need to bring?

  • A sleeping bag.
  • A roll mat – if you want a better nights sleep.
  • Suitable clothing – we advise looking at the weather forecast before you go and planning accordingly. This could mean warm clothes for the evenings, waterproofs or a sunhat.
  • A torch – for finding your tent in the dark.
  • Snacks (we recommend taking a packed lunch for your first day)
  • Water/hydration – canoeing can be thirsty work.
  • Money – cash is useful on this trip.
  • A camera – so you can snap your amazing mini-adventure.

Do I need canoeing experience?

No – this trip is great for beginners all the way up to those who are experienced in canoeing. Before you set off you’ll get an short introductory session when you will learn the basics. You will be provided with a life jacket and clear instructions along with contact details that you can use if you have any questions during the trip.

Is this trip suitable for solo adventurers?

No, this is a private trip that requires a minimum of two people. We do however run open group adventures that anyone can book onto and is perfect for solo adventurers. Check them out here or get in touch to find out more.

Are there any additional charges?

With regards to the canoeing, there are no additional charges. We will reserve your campsite for you which you will have to pay for upon arrival (£7.20 per tent) – if you want to use the shower this will cost £3.15) and you’ll also need to leave a £10 deposit to get the campsite key (refundable upon return of key). The campsite will prefer you to pay in cash.
